Sabrina Collares | Cultural Anthropophagist

It is the necessity for agency that drives us to want to tell the world about who we are and our impact in the construction of reality around us.

Sabrina Collares is an artist born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1985. She graduated in 2018 with a BA (Hons) Fine Art from Middlesex University in London. The artist is specializing in Postcolonial art and culture as well as the influence of visual language in the decolonization of traditional Eurocentric narratives. Sabrina works with a variety of mediums, such as drawing, painting, acrylics, collage, sculpture etc. The artist is currently based in London and her practice is heavily inspired by the miscegenation, colonialism and anthropology in Brazil as well as the problematisation around Eurocentrism, and the issues involving identity and culture in the Brazilian context. Her inspiration comes mainly from History, Philosophy, Politics, Cultural and Postcolonial Studies. Sabrina’s work is generally presented inverting tradition Western paintings in a ceaseless cultural anthropophagic quest.

Her body of work is often not defined by a final piece, but yet open in order to carry on the narrative in the next works. The artist’s practice is extremely detailed, labour intensive and sometimes even compulsive. Each material performs a dialogue and the intention is to portray a very complex narrative starting from her subject of interest and that inexorably, surfaces in the artworks she produces.  In essence, the artist says: “It is the necessity for agency that drives us to want to tell the world about who we are and our impact on the construction of reality around us.”
